TEMPLE-STYLE TOGGLE WHALING HARPOON, American, 19th century, with original rope; length 35 in. Lewis Temple (1800 – 18 May 1854) was an American blacksmith, abolitionist, and inventor who in 1848 invented the "toggling harpoon" that is sometimes called "Temple's Toggle," and which made capturing whales much more successful.
