Description

SCRIMSHAW-DECORATED VIOLIN FROM THE SHIP ORION , 1865, with bow and case. John G. Murdoch & Co. Ltd. London EC/ The Maidstone label inside f-hole. The fingerboard with ivory insets carved with ship and half-sun, anchor with ship name Orion and date 1865, and rope. Bridge replaced with ivory shaped as a sash, carved with a whale and two porpoises. Tailpiece replaced with ivory carved with bird in tree and geometric designs. End pin also replaced with carved ivory. Body of violin has applied carved baleen decorations. 24" long x 8" wide. Case has typed label glued inside reading Old viola made by William Pugh onboard ship in about 1870. Given to his so[n], Richard Pugh as a gift when he arrived at port after a year's absence. Given to me this day, Oct. 1, 1930 by Richard Pugh my grandfather, at New Bedford. Mrs. A.C. Hayes. Also glued to case are two 19th-century "Rewards of Merit."
