LARGE NARWHAL TUSK Monodon monocerus The Narwhal is unlike any other cetacean. The male has a long spiraling tusk, not normally found in the female of the species. The tusk, which grows to a length of 5 - 10 feet, is actually a modified tooth that spirals down and tapers to a smooth, shiny point. Often associated with the horn of the mythical unicorn, the Narwhal tooth has found its way into the books of scientific rarities and mythical tales. So prized was the fabled horn of the unicorn that Queen Elizabeth in the 16th century paid an astounding 10,000 British Pounds for one, equivalent to the cost of an entire castle. The Narwhal tooth is revered by many cultures around the world. In Japan, two crossed Narwhal teeth adorn the entrance to the Korninkaku Palace. In Denmark, multiple teeth comprise the frame of the Danish throne. The royal scepter in England is made from the rare Narwhal tooth, perhaps the one that Queen Elizabeth purchased in the 16th century. The present specimen measures 6 feet 11 inches in length and is from a museum collection in Ohio. It comes complete with documentation allowing it to be sold within the United States. However, it is important to note that it cannot be exported outside of the United States and therefore we cannot accept bids from buyers outside of the U.S.
