Founded by brothers Alfred, Frederick, Henry, and Robert JOHNSON;  Expanded rapidly by acquiring or opening 5 different factories by 1898 in the same region of Staffordshire, UK;  Further expansion included establishing sales operations in the USA in early-20thC and acquiring SOVEREIGN POTTERS, Ltd., [est. 1933] in Hamilton, ON, Canada, in 1947 and opening SOVEREIGN POTTERY in Croydon, Queensland, Australia, in 1957, both of which closed in the 1970s;  Some items made in Australia are trademarked as JOHNSON OF AUSTRALIA;  Joined the WEDGWOOD GROUP in 1968, but continues to use their own trademarks;  Manufacturing stopped in the UK by 2004 and all subsequent production is currently outsourced from factories overseas, mostly from China
